- In 1911, this portrait was in the collection of W. Percival Boxall who bought it after the death of William Hayley, to whom Opie presented the picture. No subsequent reference to it has been found by Dr Paul Barnaby, Project Officer of the Walter Scott Digital Archive (to whom many thanks for his kind permission to reproduce these images). John Opie was married to the writer Amelia Opie.
