Murray in his scriptorium
Perhaps the best known photo of J. A. H. Murray, the chief editor of OED1, in his scriptorium, the hut built in the garden of his house at 78 Banbury Road, Oxford, in which he carried out editing of the Dictionary. All round him are ranged shelves of pigeon-holed quotation slips, the evidential basis of all the entries in the published work.
